Designed by Holman and Pye to replace their legendary Oyster 435, the 45 did so with aplomb. With greatly enhanced interior volume, the 45 feels a lot more spacious, whilst retaining the Oyster rugged offshore trademarks of single-skin hull construction, keel-stepped mast, and full length rudder skeg.
Perhaps the best feature of the 45 is the full width saloon, which has a lovely light and open feel due to the large Oyster deck saloon windows, two of which open to provide superb ventilation. The straight saloon seating provides two excellent sea-berths. When opened up, the wonderful saloon table connects the two settees, and enables a large number of guests to be entertained. The aft end of the saloon is open to the galley, so the cook is also fully involved socially.
Just aft of the navigation station is a large walk-in locker, which can also be accessed from the cockpit. A hugely popular feature among 45 owners, this space can be used for storage, a workshop and location for an aft holding tank.
A great performer under sail, the 45 nonetheless has a gentle motion offshore thanks to her balanced hull, fine entry, and the stiffness provided by her external lead bulb keel. The 45 is a proven circumnavigator, long distance blue-water cruiser and live aboard, but due to her compact overall length she is also a great local family cruiser, as she is simplicity itself to handle. Oyster launched twenty-three Oyster 45s in an eight-year production, run between 1996 and 2004.
Iona Bess is a late model 45, which her current owner bought in 2003 through Oyster Brokerage. She has been used for cruising in north west European waters, and has been upgraded and specified for ocean cruising. Simple sloop rig with electric in-mast furling and electric furling to her genoa, her removable inner forestay allows a storm jib to be flown. Comprehensively equipped, she also benefits from the traditional teak interior joinery below decks, where she sleeps six in three cabins.

Access to the saloon from the companionway is down a removable set of teak steps, which are shaped and fitted with stainless steel handrails.
The deck saloon is extremely light and airy with seven windows, of which the forward outboard pair is opening. A feature opening hullport each side allows visual contact with the outside whilst seated and contributes to the great feeling of space and light in the saloon.
Featuring an L-shaped settee area and table on the port side with fixed fiddle around saloon table upper surface.
To starboard is a two-seater settee, which extends beneath the forward counter top into a trotter box, forming a useful sea berth with lee cloth.
The saloon table is designed to form, in its closed position, an occasional table, which is mounted on a very substantial pedestal base. Stowage for bottles and a single drawer are incorporated into the pedestal. This table has a fold over upper leaf, which opens onto a removable support strut to allow both sides of the saloon to be used for seating whilst dining.
The saloon includes a fully equipped bar. Stowage for glasses is provided in a locker above the trotter box.
The port shelf, outboard of the settee is fitted out as a bookcase.

Incorporated into the accommodation are a number of grab rails, including one overhead in the saloon and one on the inboard fore and aft edge of the saloon tabletop.
The chart table area is forward facing at the aft starboard end of the saloon and is customised around the flush-mounted electronics and navigation equipment.
